Using Masks In Photoshop

Wanna add a ~fun~ twist to your photography by adding some design elements in post? Here’s an easy way how:

  1. Import your selected photo into Photoshop.
  2. Add whatever text or shape you like.
  3. In the layers panel you should see the shape/text thumbnail above the background thumbnail. The text thumbnail should be a “T”, and a shape thumbnail should be named after whatever shape it is.
  1. To the right of the shape/text thumbnail there should be a white box, this is called a “Mask”. If you don’t see a white box, look to the bottom of the layers panel. There should be a small rectangle with a circle inside it. Click it. Masks are an easy way to delete areas of an image impermanently, so you can always go back and change things later.
  2. Select the “Brush Tool” and make it’s selected colour black. Now make sure to select the white box before drawing. Whatever area you click on the layer with the brush will turn invisible. If you make a mistake you can change the brush colour to white, now whatever you draw will return to how it looked originally.
  3. Now all you need to do is tweak your image to your liking.
